Know your heart risk sooner - learn how a CT Calcium Score can support proactive heart health.
Every February, Heart Health Awareness Month reminds us how important it is to understand and protect our heart health. As part of our ongoing work with the Heart Foundation, Auckland Radiology Group (ARG) is committed to helping Kiwis take proactive steps toward prevention.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in Aotearoa New Zealand, and every 90 minutes heart disease takes the life of a loved one.
Within CVD, the most common kind of heart disease is Coronary Artery disease (CAD). CAD occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked due to build up of plaque. This reduces blood flow to the heart and increases the risk of serious events such as heart attacks and strokes.
One of the most effective tools for understanding your heart disease risk is through CT Calcium Scoring. This simple, non‑invasive scan can reveal signs of CAD.
Why early detection matters
Detecting heart disease at an early stage allows time to take action. With a clearer understanding of risk, people can make informed lifestyle changes and work with their GP or specialist on a personalised intervention plan.
What is CT Calcium Scoring?
CT Calcium Scoring is a specialised CT scan that measures calcium build-up in the arteries supplying blood to the heart. The presence of calcium indicates CAD and provides valuable information about future heart risk – helping guide early, proactive care.
“CT Calcium Scoring provides a clear, objective measure of heart disease risk, allowing clinicians to identify people who may benefit from timely, tailored care. By raising awareness this February, we hope to empower more Kiwis to take steps that protect their long-term heart health.” David Healey, Chief Medical Officer, RHCNZ (parent organisation of ARG).

Who should consider it?
A CT Calcium Score can be helpful for people who are asymptomatic (not experiencing symptoms) and who either meet certain age and ethnicity criteria and/or have known risk factors for heart disease.
Age and ethnicity criteria
Men:
- Over 45 years, or
- Over 35 years for Māori, Pacific peoples, and men from the Indian subcontinent
Women:
- Over 55 years, or
- Over 45 years for Māori, Pacific peoples, and women from the Indian subcontinent
Risk factors
You may also benefit from the scan if you have any of the following risk factors:
- Unhealthy cholesterol levels
- High blood pressure
- Smoking history
- Diabetes mellitus
- Family history of premature heart disease
- Obesity or chronic kidney disease
If you fall into any of the age and ethnicity, risk categories, or if you have concerns about your heart health, speak to your doctor about a CT Calcium Score test.
Once you have a referral, you can schedule your scan with us at a clinic near you.
